Any of various sparrow-sized ground-dwelling songbirds of the genus Anthus of the family Motacillidae, order Passeriformes.

The European meadow pipit Anthus pratensis is about the size of a sparrow and streaky brown, with a slender notched bill. It lives in open country and feeds on the ground. Other British species are the tree pipit, A. trivialis, and the rock pipit, A. petrosus.
